Afu-Ra, né Aaron Phillipest un rappeur américain originaire de Brooklyn, à New York. Son originalité dans le milieu artistique du hip hop américain est qu'il a mélanger le style rastafari avec les arts martiaux, Il fût le petit protégé du rappeur Jeru The Damaja puis fit partit de la Gang Starr Foundation.
Enfant, lui et le rappeur Jeru The Damaja ont grandit dans le même quartier, ce qui explique que sa premiere apparition en 1994 fut sur l'album " The Sun Rises in the East " de ce dernier, ou il posa des couplets sur " Mental Stamina " et en 1996 " Physical Stamina " sur l'album " Wrath Of The Math ". Il rentra alors dans la Gang Starr Foundation, composé entre autres de Gang Starr, Jeru The Damaja, Big Shug, Krumbsnatcha, Group Home, Fredie Foxxx... En 1998 sors son premier single " Whirlwind Thrue Cities " qui finira dans le Top 20 Hip Hop de cette année, suivi en 1999 des singles " Defeat " produit par Dj Premier et " Mortal Kombat ". Son premier album intitulé " The Body Of The Life Force " sortit en octobre 2000 auquels participèrent Dj Premier, Dj Muggs (Cypress Hill), et True Master, affilié au Wu-Tang Clan pour les productions et les participations de rappeurs comme GZA, Masta Killa et M.O.P.. En mai 2002 sortit son 2ème album " Life Force Radio " suivit de " Afu-Ra presents Perverted Monks " et de " State Of The Arts " en 2005.

Afu's debut single, '"Whirlwind Thru Cities", was released in 1998, reaching the top 20 on Billboard's Hot Rap Singles chart. In 1999, he released his second single, "Defeat" b/w "Mortal Kombat". His anticipated debut album, Body of the Life Force, was released in October 2000. The album featured production from a number of prominent Hip Hop beatmakers, including DJ Premier, DJ Muggs, True Master and Da Beatminerz. Guests included Wu-Tang Clan's GZA and Masta Killa, M.O.P., Ky-Mani Marley and the Cocoa Brovaz. "Whirlwind Thru Cities", "Defeat" and "Mortal Kombat" were included here, as well as the singles "Equality", "Big Acts, Little Acts" and "D&D Soundclash".
